TANK + RASPBERRY PI + FEW ODDS AND ENDS

Fresh or Saltwater tank is the primary object in the stack.  Running a sump is not necessary but will give you the full benefit of being able to manage all the contraptions that make up your aquarium. If you choose to simply just monitor temperature and populate your installation with details about your water parameters and critters within that’s fine.  Your stack will just be smaller.

The primary electronic component in the stack is the Raspberry Pi 3, Pi 2 and lower will work but we advise version 3 and regardless of which Pi you have the operating system requirement is (Jessie). Fundamentally the Raspberry Pi is a computer than can act as a web server, database server or pc that is able to talk to electronics and make decisions based on what it see’s.  Essentially its a computer that can participate in the physical world.

What we do is turn this little guy into an accessible web server that is able to control powered devices.  And that is ANY device from your lighting to your protein skimmer against an intelligent schedule set by you.  This would also mean that you can exclude certain pieces of equipment from operating during certain times of the day.

Being a web server means it’s available over your home network or abroad from the internet.  The potential is crazy.

Followed by a bunch of little goodies that add to the excitement and bring the project alive.  A couple of temperature sensors, relays to control your 110v or 240v devices and some float switches to operate the up and coming automatic water top off unit. Examples of how to put this all together can be followed in the tutorial section of the hardware build.  We also have a shopping guide that will help you buy the items you need to build your controller.  It’s not hard at all.  You need to understand the complexities.  All of the complex configuration is handles via the webpage of the Raspberry Pi and along with our how to you will  be up in no time at all.

The final component is the Software itself, which is essentially made of two parts.  One is the website that controls everything and the second part is a few services that run on your raspberry pi as service scripts that keep and eye out for changes and also flips the switches and controls the power devices based on your settings specified in the website.
